About the Centre

A flagship institution designed to catalyze West Bengal's transition into an innovation-led economy — connecting founders, researchers, government, industry, and investors.

The Institution

Building West Bengal's Innovation Future

The Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee Centre for Technology & Innovation (SPMCTI) is conceived as West Bengal's premier platform for technology, innovation, and entrepreneurship. It is designed to serve as a comprehensive ecosystem hub — bringing together the state's academic institutions, research laboratories, startups, industry partners, investors, and government departments into a unified framework for innovation-led growth.

The Centre operates at the intersection of startup incubation, research commercialization, deep-tech development, GovTech innovation, and talent development. It is not merely a physical space but a state-level innovation mission — a platform that enables ideas to become enterprises, research to become products, and public challenges to become scalable solutions.

Rooted in the ambition to make West Bengal a globally competitive innovation destination, the Centre serves as a bridge between the state's rich academic heritage, its growing entrepreneurial energy, and the vast opportunities in emerging technologies. It is built for scale, designed for impact, and oriented towards long-term institution-building.

Strategic Foundation

Why the Centre Was Conceived

Entrepreneurship-Led Growth

West Bengal's economy needs a structural shift towards innovation-driven enterprise creation. The Centre provides the institutional framework to support this transition — from first-time founders to deep-tech ventures.

Research Commercialization Gap

Despite significant academic and research capacity, the state lacks structured pathways for translating laboratory innovations into market-ready products and enterprises. The Centre bridges this critical gap.

Digital Transformation Imperative

From MSMEs to public services, West Bengal requires comprehensive digital transformation support. The Centre serves as the state's innovation nerve center for technology adoption and digital infrastructure development.

Startup Ecosystem Strengthening

While the startup ecosystem is growing, it needs institutional support — mentorship, capital access, industry connections, and market pathways — to compete with established startup hubs across India.

Future Technology Capacity

AI, cybersecurity, quantum computing, and sovereign digital systems require dedicated institutional support for research, development, and deployment. The Centre creates this capacity for the state.

Ecosystem Architecture

The Centre as a Bridge

The Centre is designed to be the connective tissue of West Bengal's innovation landscape — linking stakeholders who rarely interact into a cohesive, productive ecosystem.

Government
Academia
Industry
Startups
Investors
Youth Talent

By creating structured engagement models across these stakeholder groups, the Centre enables co-innovation, technology transfer, pilot partnerships, and talent development that would not occur in isolation.

Inspiration

A Legacy of Institution-Building

Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee

Visionary Scholar • Institution Builder • National Leader

The Centre draws its name and spirit from Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee — a visionary statesman, educationist, and nation-builder who played a foundational role in the political, academic, and industrial history of modern India and the state of West Bengal.

Historical Role

The Architect of Modern West Bengal

In 1947, during the partition of India, when proposals threatened to include the entire province of Bengal in Pakistan, Dr. Mukherjee spearheaded a resolute campaign to partition Bengal. By securing the Hindu-majority western districts within the Indian Union, he ensured the creation of West Bengal, preserved Kolkata as its capital, and secured a safe homeland for millions.

Industrial Legacy

Pioneering Industrial Infrastructure

As India's first Minister for Industry and Supply in the post-independence cabinet, he established the core foundations of the nation's industrial policy. Under his leadership, monumental projects like the Chittaranjan Locomotive Works, the Sindri Fertilizer Factory, the Hindustan Aircraft Factory (now HAL), and the Damodar Valley Corporation (DVC) were founded.

Educational Vision

Academic Reform & Innovation

At just 33, he served as the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta (1934–1938). He introduced vernacular education in Bengali, expanded research in basic and applied sciences, and bridged the gap between academic research and local industrial needs—laying the groundwork for technology translation.

“This Centre carries forward that multi-faceted legacy — building a state-of-the-art institution that combines academic excellence, technological innovation, entrepreneurial ambition, and a commitment to public service. It is not a memorial but a living platform, designed to embody the spirit of building something enduring for the people of West Bengal and India.”
